Book Reviews

“The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those don’t.

As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.

Aelin’s journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?”

unknownThe time has come people! After ignoring my responsibilities and my depravation of sleep–I have finished Empire of Storms and truly, a round of applause to Ms. Maas for having  written a well-throughout, clever, steamy, engaging series. Empire of Storms exceeds expectations and proves that Maas is a master storyteller. A gripping story of such strong emotions, snatched moments of romance, redemption, bravery, cunningness, and of heartbreak. A truly wicked masterpiece; if you have not read any of Maas’s work, you are clearly missing out on the fun.

Before  I start fan-girling again–let’s start from the beginning

The Plot

I came into the this book blind. I literally believed Aelin was just going to waltz into her homeland, get crowned Queen, and her and Rowan were going to start making babes. I was sooooo wrong haha! Instead of being greeted with open arms, Aelin is met with such deep hatred, scorn, disbelief. Her kinsman do not believe her ready or rightful for the crown and still hold her accountable  for her actions when being Celeania and not helping her people. It  was heartbreaking watching this woman who we have watched worked so hard for her people be torn apart.

The Gods Interfering

Whoa! The gods in this book really like to torture people! Haha! I do not want to reveal too much but Princess Elena really set Alein for an awful life.

Maeve is literally evil incarnate. She has patiently set her web over Aelin and Rowan and watched in amusement as they squirmed and played right into her trap. I really hope she gets what she deserves in the next book!

Shifting POVs

I love how Maas is able to switch perspectives and characters and make us love them so deeply. We learn such shocking secrets about Manon as she rebels against her grandmother and learns of her heritage, follow Elide as she and Lorcan team together and watch their budding friendship, and watch with thrilling curiosity as the tension between Dorian and Manon and Lysandra and Aedion blossom. I really liked learning more about Elide  as she learns how to become stronger under the protective eye of Lorcan. With the demi-fey warrior, I am still confused by his loyalty of Maeve but I liked seeing another side of him.

GRAB Your seatbelt kids–Adventure!

Such epicness! Maas truly knows how to weave a story with such dramatic battles and wondrous beasts. At Skull Bay, there is an amazing  naval battle with sea wyverns and a sea dragon, teeth-gritting fighting scenes, and we get to scratch our heads in wonderment as Aelin outfoxes everyone. Jesus, that fire-bitch-queen really knows to strategize.I always forgot how ruthlessly cunning Aelin can be and how she even leaves her loved ones in the dark. A powerful tool as a queen but as a friend, it is an awful trait that hurts her group.

Aelin-Rowan

Exactly what we have been waiting for. These two beings who have suffered, lost loves, and have been hurt tremendously, find trust and love within each other’s arms. There romance is necessary in this book and extremely appreciated. Their romance is hot and I loved every minute of their tender, silly moments and their serious, heartbreaking ones. And moment of silence for Rowan–he is just too perfect. His love for Aelin is so staggering and well deserved.

Aedion–Lysandra

Uhh! Aedion is so cute! He totally understand with Lysandra’s past that she will need time and demonstrates patience as he provides friendship for her. He is so amazing with her (let’s forget that ending scene for a minute) and his devotion to her is heartwarming. We were introduced to the possibility of their romance in the previous book but now we must agonizingly wait and see if they can get past their differences in the future.

Manon-Dorian

We knew this one was coming. Manon is just as fierce and powerful as ever but with Dorian, she is stripped defenseless. Dorian suspects that his main attraction to Manon is because she is immortal and will not easily die like Scorcha did. Because of this, Dorian feels comfortable flirting with Manon, knowing that he can allow his feelings to mature because she is immortal. I am not sure if it is love between them yet but I love the hot, tempered looks and tension. They are both fascinated with each other and I cannot wait to watch their romance be set aflame in the future.

Elide-Lorcan

We were introduced to the bad-boy Lorcan in the previous book and we get to see a new side to him as he and Elide join together. Starting off as friends, they both conceal themselves as they travel together with carnies as a married couple. There are funny scenes with Lorcan’s bewilderment of Elide’s strength and defiance and some steamy scenes involving the demi-fey and a specific sword-throwing show. Their romance is a slow-building, natural thing yet Lorcan cannot shake his obsession with Maeve and really digs himself in a hole. Sighhhhhhhh.

The Ending

Normally, I write spoilers but I felt like it would be rude to reveal the heartbreaking moment at the end and the slight tremors of hope. You have been warned–bring plenty of tissues! The next book will be the end of the series–which is a relief. I do not think I can handle anymore surprises!

Overall

Thank you Mass for once again giving me a heart attack, anxiety as I wait for the next book, and writing so beautifully. Maas’s books get better with time and I know the final book in the series will destroy me.
